Samsung Omnia Personal Thoughs

Written by WishBoNe on August 4, 2008 – 5:33 pm

After using the Samsung Omnia for more than a week, I can safely say that I love it. I love the slimness and it’s sleek looks. I like the auto brightening of the display based on the surrounding lighting. I am use the auto function. So far, it seems to work fairly. I’m not a good gauge at the display.

I like the way Samsung built in the keyboards. They are not too tiny like the default keyboards that comes with Windows Mobile. I can press the keys using my finger and that is why I dislike iPhone despite its sleekness :D

Windows Mobile 6.1 has threaded messages and it makes it so much easier to continue the SMS if you key in halfway and have to answer someone else. I don’t have to save the message and read the message that I was trying to reply too. Unfortunately, deleting a message also means deleting the whole thread and you can’t save just one message from the same person.

I tried the mass sending of SMS and sent blank messages instead. I don’t know if that’s what it was supposed to do but I wasted a few good long SMS that way. Thus, I won’t be attempting the stunt except using the email. The volume is quite good but the vibration is a wee bit too weak. Perhaps it’s the size.

Overall, I love it a lot because I can take quite decent photos with the 5MP camera. The dim lighting will cause the photos to go dark but when I tried using the flash, the photos turned out too white. Looks like my S5 IS is a better option for such condition.

There is a slight lag despite turning off the Samsung Widget programme. I feel that the processor speed is alright but the RAM should be increased since it doesn’t seem to match the processor speed.

I still haven’t used the Wifi because the last time I connect to Wireless@SG, I didn’t manage to surf the net except the error page.

Review: Twitter

Written by WishBoNe on September 7, 2007 – 4:24 pm

I have been using Twitter, a lot. Basically, it’s called microblogging. Initially, as someone who plays with new toys with fervour, I started posting tweets almost every second. Kidding.

I can use it from the main site after logging and and post my thoughts, all 140 characters. Or I can use TwitterMSN (which has been down for quite a few days, probably due to constant upgrades on Twitter), TwitterMail, Facebook (which I don’t have and refuse to sign up for, yet) or fing (whatever that is). I can even send tweets via global SMS which will cost a lot or GTalk or use the Twitter Tools (which happens to be down when Twitter is doing upgrades) that Alex King has developed.

Apparently, it is always upgrading something. I don’t know what upgrades because I can’t see them. Perhaps faster response, privacy settings or something. There’s an explore function that’s new and there’s also a search box for searching the registered users (finally).

Integration with GMail does nothing for me since I don’t use it, except to read  my feeds. Those links that are on my tweets? From my feeds, obviously :D

While I was quite happy with its simple usage, I’m rather turned off by the constant upgrades that I can’t seem to see any changes besides the explore and search functions. The reply to other tweets seemed rather restricted. I can only reply to their latest tweets while the system automatically links to their latest tweets. Not that I can’t just reply but it seems awkward.

So, while I’m not totally berating Twitter, I’m sure there will be more upgrades that I hope is for better, come and join me.

Spam SMS

Written by WishBoNe on May 12, 2007 – 7:26 am

Owning a handphone can be a bane. You get to be contactable at all times but when you do need the time to yourself, you don’t because it will ring at the most un-realistic time, when you had just settle yourself most comfortably in bed.

Another bane of it is the amount of spam messages you get. I haven’t had any in my 10 years of using this number (thank goodness) but this morning, besides seeing that I had a stye (again), this message asking for a one night stand was the last straw. I curse that sender. If only there’s a way to control how my number is being distributed.

Message asking for one night stand

As an afterthought, I wonder if this post would get a lot hits in the search. Let’s see in the next few days :P

Who’s The Expert?

Written by WishBoNe on January 30, 2007 – 5:21 pm

“Who’s the Skype expert?” Someone asked. I don’t think there can really be experts in every software that we use in the company. I hear “Who’s the Word expert?”, “Who’s the Excel expert?”, “Who’s the PowerPoint expert?, “Who’s the Lotus Notes expert?”, “Who’s the <insert software/hardware name> expert?” most of the time. Sometimes, I cringe at the question.

There are times problems stump the experts too. That’s why Experts Exchange came about. Experts exchange information and resolutions. As users, we’d always assume that since this company has produced this software, the consultants working inside, no matter how new, they would should be experts in the area. We’d go asking “Who’s the expert?”

On why this came about was a user asking a Skype question. There was a message saying that the message was not delivered and she wanted to know why. The logical answer was that the recipient was not logged on and thus, the message would not get through. I do know that MSN Windows Live does support sending messages to offline contacts. Now, can the Skype expert enlighten me on whether messages can still be sent to offline contacts?

The next question was that why the recipient was not logged on when the user was logged on. The logical answer is that the user had saved the login settings and upon startup, Skype would log in automatically. The recipient may have set it to manual. The user suggested that everyone should do the same, login automatically at every startup. Now, isn’t that a waste of precious resources and if I’m not in the mood to use Skype, why the heck should I do it automatically?

Oh by the way, I put in busy mode and I don’t add strangers. It’s unnerving to receive requests from total strangers on my Skype. 2 are rude, they just said “Hello, please add me to your contact list.” I don’t know you, so I won’t add you. And the shortest of them all that I used to see before I migrated from mIRC is “Hi, care to chat” No punctuation at the end, mind you. So is that a question or demand?

IMs in Our Lives

Written by WishBoNe on December 6, 2006 – 3:54 pm

I use MSN daily. Or try to especially when it’s difficult to use it at work. Thing is, we can use Skype because we’re assigned a Skype ID after we join the company but we can’t use MSN? Now, what’s the difference between Skype and MSN? Both allow text messages to be sent to the other party instantly, maybe this is the only common feature. I don’t know since it’s been quite a while since I last used Skype.

Back to the point where I can’t use MSN at work. The reason is that I can’t be heard on the telephone whole day and letting the rest of the world know that I’m planning what to wear for my friends’ wedding, going shopping at a certain shopping mall at a certain date and time, yadda, yadda, right? So, why are we allowed to use Skype but not MSN?

I don’t understand what the deal is with this guy who was out to discredit me. Maybe I had accidentally stepped on his tail, like telling him to take the rest of the stuff in the bottle to his desk instead of having to walk to it. The bottle happened to be in front of my boss’ desk and I’m sitting beside my boss. Anyone walking towards my boss, I’m the 1st to know, it’s distracting. Hence, my words have hurt him in front of my boss and maybe some others who could have overheard me. Maybe it’s his way of getting back at me. I don’t know.
