Things You learn And Don’t in School

Written by WishBoNe on May 29, 2007 – 9:44 am

Apparently, Bill Gates gave a speech in a school about 11 things that they learn and don’t in school. It can be found here.

The following are my favourite.

Rule 4 - If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 6 - If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 8 - Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 10 - Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 - Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one. I think the nerd he referred to was himself?

Amen to Bill Gates. Very well said! I have a list of 11 things too.

    1. If you complain about how boring it is to listen to the teacher talk, think about this: they have it 6 times worse.

    2. Keep your butt in school and your brain engaged. Both of my parents stopped trying in middle school and, years later, my family has homeless off and on because of it.

    3. Greet the teachers every day and ask them how they are doing if they seem stressed out. Even one or two minutes a day with each one makes a difference because it helps to know someone cares.

    4. You know how at the end of the day, it seemed long at first and then it seems short looking back? Well, that’s the way school is, guys, and over time, your entire life. Cherish every moment.

    5. Bake cookies or draw pictures for the teachers that are special to you. I have love having strong friendships with them at school, and if you learn how to be friends with them, you can befriend your bosses too. It also makes them seem less intimidating!

    6. Take your time on tests. I often finished last, but almost always get As and even achieved the highest WASL scores in my school. Check each question at least 3 times!

    7. Don’t buy into stereotypes!! Some Asians, for example, might like art and tennis instead of math and music. Blacks are rarely as dumb as the media likes to protray them. I know several who are intelligent, well-rounded people. Some are good at drawing, history, speaking Japanese, spelling, etc. This one applies to me: skinny blonde girls like me can be very intelligent!

    8. English class, even though it is dull, is probably the most important class because reading and writing are essential in today’s society. So if you want a good job and satisfying life, pay attention!

    9. If you think your peers are tough, wait until you experience coworkers.

    10. Don’t team up with the smart people every chance you get. We can get revenge. There are even times when us brainiacs aren’t always right. We are human, after all. ;)

    11. Help out the adults and kids whenever you get a chance instead of just walking buy. If someone drops their stuff, help pick it up. Team up with the lunch ladies to clean up the cafeteria. Little things add up, and eventually you will get a good reputation and a much higher self esteem for yourself.

Oh, that’s nice. I love your No. 4, 7 and 9. It’s not good to stereotype. It’s not even healthy!
