There Are Mean People Out There
Written by WishBoNe on May 17, 2007 – 6:56 amI used to join in forums to comment or ask questions. That was was until someone on a technical forum got mean. I reacted by being mean too. That got that mean person to get my ID on that forum being unable to log in. I have never went back to that forum since.
Upon reflection, although it was meant to be a technical forum that was supposed to be like Experts Exchange, only a handful were helpful. The rest were out to cause havoc. A new post by Lorelle lead me to an old post about the flamers and other cowards who are just out to bully someone they can’t see and abuse their privileges for reporting someone. The someone whom they have reported was the one they wanted to see if they would react with evil words in the forum that was enough to get them banned.
I had an unkind remark on another blog of mine recently. I was writing a story that contained quite a number of links including that person’s and all I got was “Did those have any relations to the story or are you linking just for the sake of it?” That hurt. A lot.
I had been meaning to link to related posts in a new story but that person was unkind to say that. I don’t just link for the page rank or anything like that. Since the story is online, I might as well create something that Blog Carnival has been doing and see if it can get interesting. Besides, I had fun doing those links because most of them whom I had linked to in the story were happy.
In short, there will always be mean and thoughtless people out there.

It’s really easy to lash out at mean commenters and forum members, but tough when that kind of a response get actually inflame, making the momentary “feel good” turn into a disaster and make things worse.
There are mean folks everywhere and you can let them beat you up or just slough them off. It ain’t easy, but it happens. Be bigger and stronger than them and pick your battles.

Lorelle, I agree, I was naive to think that by lashing out, others would see my point of view. It was one of the 1st few forums that I joined, hoping that some helpful soul would help me.
Your post led me to other posts about trolls and evils out there who can actually have a following to help them go against someone. Scary.
I still participate in forums but I pick certain threads. There’s no point in saying things that are not related to the thread and get flamed for trying to be helpful.
