Seeds of Imagination

Written by WishBoNe on May 31, 2007 – 7:37 pm

Time to have some fun with words. Seeds of Imagination is rather interesting as it lets you grow seeds with your words typed in. I have managed to grow 6 plants with different characteristics.

Seeds of Imagination

There are times when I don’t get any changes in the plant. However, the growth is very nicely done.

The loading time on the other hand was long. I don’t understand why.

Career Path Review - Yet Again

Written by WishBoNe on May 30, 2007 – 9:05 pm

I had a discussion with a friend of mine this afternoon. We have just completed that final exam for the step towards our degree and I was telling her that I want to get out of programming because I feel that I am no longer able to chase after the latest technology. I do wonder if it’s due to my leaving of a challenging company a few months back. It is not the first time since I left that company and reviewed my career path. I have been thinking if I should get out of IT and do something else.

Another friend told me that life’s short, we have to do whatever we feel is the right time to execute. I’ve been doing Lotus Notes development for 4 years and I think I’m not cut out for it. Maybe the lack of challenges in the current company? I am still able to earn my keep and there is not much pressure on the system being forced to work “bug-free” during UAT.

I don’t have any users calling me. Yet. Or I need a new learning curve because I keep ending up doing client based Notes applications instead of web based Notes applications that I prefer. I like that because it’s easier to control user actions. They won’t use the keyboard “Esc” key to close a document that they don’t want to save. I don’t have so many fields to place the Formula individually.

Maybe I’m asking for too much. Who would want to develop web based applications when it takes longer to complete than a client based? Me, I guess. I like playing around with CSS and JavaScript.

Maybe I am really just not cut out for IT.

Things You learn And Don’t in School

Written by WishBoNe on May 29, 2007 – 9:44 am

Apparently, Bill Gates gave a speech in a school about 11 things that they learn and don’t in school. It can be found here.

The following are my favourite.

Rule 4 - If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 6 - If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 8 - Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 10 - Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 - Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one. I think the nerd he referred to was himself?

SMS For Bus Arrival

Written by WishBoNe on May 28, 2007 – 9:44 am

It’s always a good idea on knowing when the bus will arrive and time your arrival to the bus stop. However, the SMS idea is only available to Singtel users at this moment. The other way is via the web. Darn.

I’m hoping this would be popular so that I can make use of it.

WM 6 Devices

Written by WishBoNe on May 26, 2007 – 8:05 am

It’s so much easier with CNet Asia doing the tracking of which handheld devices get an upgrade to WM 6. For Singapore, these are some of the various devices that are available now and upcoming from June too. Other Asia Pacific countries can be found here.

Although they will be upgraded, I think new handheld devices will still be launched. It’s a matter of preference for which model and functions that you are comfortable with.

Blogging Lessons To Be Learnt

Written by WishBoNe on May 25, 2007 – 2:45 pm

I’ve been blogging for about 6 years (with the last 2 years being quite consistent). This is not my only blog. The very first was Diaryland which is no longer updated though the account still exist or deleted since I haven’t logged in for a long time. It wasn’t frequently updated because I dislike the interface.

Subsequently Friendster came but I felt that there was still something missing and discovered Wordpress. Since blogging is a hobby to me, I haven’t really considered about being outstanding or learnt any lessons along the way except that I’ve kept my writing up to date. I like to think that way.

Now, there are 27 lessons to be learnt about blogging in order to be outstanding. I think I’ve achieved none except for allowing RSS feeds here. I didn’t miss it here, right? Not to forget 18 lessons learnt after 3 years by Darren.

I have been considering to be full time blogger but I’ll need sponsors and other ways to earn while I’m at it. So, the lessons continue.

Getting Out of Programming

Written by WishBoNe on May 25, 2007 – 10:44 am

I had a breakdown. I was depressed just looking at the Lotus Notes Designer screen. I wanted to cry and go home right there and then. There didn’t seem to be any challenge in this new job that I’ve been doing for a month plus. It wasn’t what I really love to do but I have to endure and carry on.

Why the torture? During the interview, I said I won’t look for another job once I graduate, so I have to continue until the end of this contract. If not, I won’t be able to gain their trust. However, I’m worried that my performance won’t be good. Like the other time I had to leave because I was totally burnout and didn’t feel like doing anything remotely related to programming.

Maybe I shouldn’t even have accepted it in the first place. I had been planning to do something else that’s not related to programming during the break. I just want to do something nice like blogging. Yea, right, as if I can earn tons just by blogging when I can’t even put up any codes here.

My search for a host continues.

Formating With Colours

Written by WishBoNe on May 19, 2007 – 9:56 am

It’s easier to add colours in the fonts now. I don’t have to go to Color Schemer and select the hex number for the colour I want and use paste it here anymore. Cool. Except, I keep seeing a blank window when I click on More colors.

Although I am still looking for a web host, I’m still sticking with Wordpress
So, will there be more improvements?
