Translations: Do They Actually Work?

I’m looking for some sites that will translate the words into English. Since I’ll be going overseas, it would do some good to learn some of the words that may come in handy. I came across Thai to English and quite like the functions provided; Dictionary and paragraphs can be thrown into the system and let it do the translation. However, when I threw in a paragraph to it, all I got was a page that needed me to mouse over for the English meaning. Quite a lot of related words to it. The words in Thai and their English pronunciation to it may come in useful if I study hard in Thai for the next 3 months to be able to understand a sentence in Thai.
This is not the only site that provides translation. However, each language’s own grammar and verbs and other what nots are not the same for every language. By translating the words into English, it can become Engrish instead. The meanings get lost in translation and may result in misunderstanding. So, any machine translation will have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
On hindsight, Thai to English has a good way to provide the translation; every word in Thai has several meanings much like Chinese, even if the mouse over for every word will get to your nerves if you have a large chunk of words to be translated.
So, I guess we have to combine human and machine translation to get the true meaning across.
