Ways to Focus at Work

Written by WishBoNe on January 10, 2007 – 3:07 pm

I’m sure those of you who are working in offices would agree that it’s difficult to work without anyone disrupting you while trying to figure out that particular bug in the code. When you’re really into it and feel that you’ve nearly solved the bug and a user calls you or is at your desk asking you without waiting for you to re-focus on the problem he/she is facing.

Here, Dave Cheong has introduced 18 ways to focus on work. I don’t know if I can allocate time slots for colleagues to interrupt me to solve their problems. Maybe I can if I get to know them better. The time boxing recommended seems to harder to implement on programming, I wonder if anyone has managed to use it for programming. Maybe it can be done.

My main problem is checking the email and making them all read when I may have 1 or 2 that needs my attention to be done. It’s an obstacle that I’ve built and I can’t seem to kick this habit. Shall have to try harder this year.

The one thing that I’ve managed is to keep a large water bottle filled to the brim on my desk. However, I refill it twice a day. Thus I am hydrating myself at least 2 litres of plain water and going to the ladies 4 - 6 times a day. This is because I keep biscuits on hand to munch on when I’m hungry. I don’t want to end up eating too many biscuits and affect my productivity. The plus point of visiting the ladies? I keep myself awake and don’t fall flat on my face on my laptop with keyboard prints on my face later.

Now I must reduce my addiction to reading blogs and surfing randomly.
