How May I Help You?
Written by WishBoNe on December 27, 2006 – 8:22 pmI lost a post here for the 1st time. It was due to the ISP that was experiencing heavy traffic to international sites, WP is one of them.
I had a link too! A very interesting link too! Now I lost my thoughts on what I had said on that lost post! GAH!
My attempt at finding the lost post:
I started assembling computers in my 1st year of work as I was doing IT support. The job title doesn’t sound anything like IT. There were a few managers who love free advice on how to solve their computer problems (those that were in their homes). There was this particular manager who loved to cut short my appetite for lunch. He would see us having our lunches and sit with us talking about other topics (sometimes he went straight to the point) and asked for our help.
The 1st time, it was ok. However, he took every opportunity to ask questions and in the process, spoilt our appetites. It was unfortunate that we were unable to look for other places to have our lunches. However, he was a lot better than our new manager. This new manager had requested an IT guy who was outsourced to the company to go to his house and troubleshoot his computer!
There was no pay as you would to the IT engineer on hourly basis of that sort. No drinks were offered either. He would enlist this engineer for his friends too. How convenient.
I had a user who called me on how to change the setting of the screen size. “Right click on your desktop.”
“How to right click?”
“On the mouse.”
“Ok, I’ve done it, what’s next?”
“Click on properties.”
“I don’t see any.”
“Did you right click on your desktop?”
“I did.”
“What’s on your monitor now?”
“My Word document.”
After a few minutes, I realised that desktop means the desk she’s sitting at, not the computer screen desktop. I stabbed the caller mentally.

It’s no wonder this letter was written to describe the frustrations.

Curses, this post is totally different from my original! I found out that Taiwan had an earthquake and the ISP was using the communications lines via Taiwan. Due to the quake, the lines were cut and I can’t access any International sites whole day. I couldn’t even do any research.
Moral of the story, have a 2nd line to use in case of any disasters.

It’s scary how many people who work in IT have had similar experiences. I want a room in my house with padded walls and a punchbag so that I can take out my frustrations in a harmless way (to prevent me from inflicting GBH on the computer abusing public).

Ooo. I love the idea of having my own room with padded walls!
